Indian Valley Boys & Girls Club: The Positive Place For Kids
Arts & Technology
ARTS & TECHNOLOGY

Arts & Technology ProgramsResearch shows that youth engaged in quality arts programs, both in school and after-school programs, get better grades and are happier with their lives. Arts and crafts allow members to express their creativity. When the creative and analytical sides of the brain work together, quality experiences occur and healthy development of children is enhanced.

Photography, general Art appreciation, as well as workshops run by students from the Philadelphia Art Institute in computer graphics are all part of the Art programs here at the North Penn Valley and Indian Valley Boys & Girls Clubs. These initiatives help young people enhance self-expression and creativity, develop multicultural appreciation, provide exposure to and develop skills in crafts and visual, performing and literary arts.

Arts
We are proud to offer a variety of outlets for our members’ creative expression. The programs include painting, drawing, construction, beading, cartoon drawing, creative writing, knitting, scrapbooking, and more! The Club expands the arts and crafts programs and participates in the National Fine Arts Contest and the National Digital Arts Festivals through the Boys & Girls Clubs of America each year.

National Fine Arts Exhibit

Sponsored by L’Oreal, this contest, which encourages creativity through a variety of media, is made up of local, regional and national exhibits. Young people are encouraged to create artwork in any of the following categories: monochromatic drawing, multicolored drawing, pastels, water color, oil or acrylic, print making, mixed media, collage and sculpture. Artwork selected through a national competition is displayed at B&GCA’s annual National Conference.

Annual National Fine Arts Exhibit
Members are encouraged to enter one piece of artwork into the annual and very popular art exhibit. This exhibit is held each January at a local business and will be judged. Winners of this exhibit will move on to regional and national levels. All work must have been done entirely by the member and within the preceding year. It must also be neat and free of smudges.

ImageMakers: National Photography Program
Funded by the Circuit City Foundation, this comprehensive photography program encourages girls and boys to learn and practice photography, expressing themselves in creative and innovative ways. The national initiative delivers a state-of-the-art photography curriculum, provides photographic resources and opportunities for Club members to compete on a national level. ImageMakers provides local, regional and national recognition through an annual photography contest. Winning photos will be displayed nationwide at museums as well as at B&GCA’s annual National Conference.

The Circuit City Foundation ImageMakers funding is being passed through to 60 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide to help them implement a photography curriculum. Ten additional sites were selected for grants to strengthen and highlight excellent photography programs in place. All Boys & Girls Clubs across the country receive the ImageMaker resource guide and materials.

TECHNOLOGY AND OTHER SPECIAL PROGRAMS

ClubTech
Through ClubTech, and thanks to a donation of more than $100 million from Microsoft, B&GCA is providing Clubs with the tools to make Club members and staff effective technology users. Every Club will receive a comprehensive package of the latest Microsoft products - a combined $88 million software gift. With another $12.3 million in cash, B&GCA is developing technology programs that will give members basic computer skills, introduce them to digital movie making, music making, photography, graphic design and Web development; and guide staff in using technology to enhance all program offerings. ClubTech also includes extensive technology training opportunities for Club staff at all professional levels.

These initiatives emphasize community mobilization and family involvement as strategies Clubs can use to better serve more young people and broaden the impact of all Club programs.

Make your own music, create and edit your own movie with your friends, make your own original art work using the computers, and experiment with digital cameras. You will be amazed at all of the different things you can create with a computer. Participants in this class will be able to post their favorite works on the web at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s YouthNet site.
